How to apply a moisturizer properly

Wednesday, December 22nd, 2010

Its important to use a moisturizer no matter what your skin condition is. Every skin type needs moisture, protection and nourishing to function normal and to be healthy. Moisturizers protect your skin from the sun, wind, cold, from the environmental pollutants and nourish your skin. They plump and comfort your skin and make the foundation easier to blend smoothly and to stay put longer. Moisturizers improve your skin quality and act as a protective layer to help trap the moisture in the skin and stop it from evaporation. They slow down the natural moisture loss throughout the day and prevent further skin dehydration. Moisturizer applied prior to makeup will help to retain moisture and keep the skin smooth and supple.
A moisturizer should be used every day, both in the morning and in the evening to keep your skin hydrated and healthy looking. A good moisturizer will increase skin’s resilience and boost its ability to protect itself from environmental irritants.

A moisturizer works as a day treatment product and support nightly skin care. Nowadays most of the moisturizers contain sun protection ingredient and have SPF at least 15 and include fragrances which give the product a fresh odor. They include oils, vitamins, plant extracts and even sunless tanners.
The benefits of applying moisturizers are:

  • protect your skin from the sun and from the environmental pollutants
  • slow down the natural moisture loss
  • nourish your skin
  • plump and comfort your skin
  • create a good base for the make up
  • improve your skin quality
  • act as a protective layer

A moisturizer should always be applied to a clean and toned face. Use mild cleanser and wash your face, exfoliate gently with circular motions and apply toner. Let your face dry, otherwise the moisturizer will just slide right off your face.

Step 2 Apply the moisturizer

Always wash your hands before applying moisturizer. Take appropriate amount and apply it to the face , avoiding eyes area. Dot moisturizer, an inch away from the eyes to avoid irritation. Instead apply an eye cream or eye gel to moisturize the eye area. Starting into the centre of the face apply the moisturizer up and out to give your face a bit of a lift. Apply the moisturizer and let it soak in at least 3 minutes before applying foundation.

Step 3 Don’t forget the neck

Don’t forget to wash off your make up before leaving for bed!

Tuesday, October 5th, 2010

Skin is a vital part of our body; therefore, its proper care is requisite. We should not forget that make up is just to add to the beauty of our skin but relying utterly on it and that too at the cost of skin may invite trouble.

However, it is quite sad to know that about 40 per cent of the women admitted that they most often forget to wash away their make up before going to bed. Most shocking is the fact that about 12 per cent of the women accepted to have the false impression that washing away make up is not necessary.

We should not forget that use of make-up may result in blocked pores, spots and blackheads, which unfortunately won’t leave you easily.

So, make sure that you wash off your make-up before going to bed and apply some moisturizer to your skin after that, as it will leave your skin supple and soft.

A spring clean for your skin

Thursday, September 16th, 2010

Cleansing is a vital element of any skin-care routine, particularly in winter when extra make-up, central heating and lack of sunshine can contribute to blocked pores and dry, flaky skin.

But, according to the experts, most of us don’t know how to clean our skin properly and so suffer with unhealthy, sallow complexions.

I’ve always been meticulous about taking off my make-up before I go to bed but, over the years, my routine has changed.

In my teens, I was strictly an Anne French cleansing milk girl. Not only did that 1970s favourite take off my make-up, but it was surprisingly good at getting greasy marks out of clothes, too.

Later, I graduated to Lancome, after getting some free samples from somewhere on my way to pick peaches in France.

Impressed by Lancome’s cleanse, tone and moisturise routine, I could barely afford the range, but the bottles did last the entire year I was away.

Now that I’m nearing the age of six in dog years, I use Dermalogica’s cleansing cream and eye make-up remover, washed off with warm water and followed by a nice smothering of their Skin Smoothing Cream. (I discovered the range when I went to one of the company’s salons for a facial.)

Has it worked? Do I have the skin of a newborn baby? Well, I don’t know for sure. But in certain dim light, I swear I could pass for my mother when she was my age.

Natural skincare guru Amanda Lacey says: ‘If you want a clear complexion, it’s absolutely vital to cleanse your skin thoroughly before you go to bed.

‘As we sleep, the skin renews and recharges itself, so make-up, pollution and oily deposits will block pores and cause infection and irritation if they’re not removed.’

Choosing the right cleanser for your skin type is important – but when faced with shelf upon shelf of different products, how do you make a decision?
